Sweden is the kingdom and it is a Nordic country in Scandinavia. It is bordered by Norway in the west, Finland in the northeast, the Skagerrak strait and the Kattegat strait in the southwest and the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia in the east. It is connected to Denmark in the southwest by the Oresund Bridge.During the 19th century a number of liberal reforms took place. In 1842, the Elementary Education Act gain legal force. A liberal opposition demanded that the Diet of the Four Estates should be abolished. In 1865 the Diet of the Four Estates was replaced with a two-chamber parliament. Also, during the 19th century a limited freedom of religion was allowed and the women's rights were improved. For instance, women were allowed to graduate from upper secondary school in 1870.Sweden has a low population density except in its metropolitan areas, with most of the inland consisting of forests.
The country has large natural resources of water, timber and iron ore. Its citizens enjoy a high standard of living in a country that is generally perceived as modern and liberal.Even though Sweden has no official language, Swedish dominated totally. The Sami language is spoken by about 7,000 people in Sweden. It may be used in government agencies, courts, preschools and nursing homes. Finnish is also official language, along with Swedish, in the city of Eskilstuna.The largest minority language are those spoken by immigrants, the most popular of which are Finnish, Arabic, Persian, Spanish and English.In Sweden, since 1901, every man between the ages of 18 and 47 is, by law forced to join military services.
It is compulsory for every one. At the age of 18, every one is called for conscription and it is seen whether the person is fit for military service or not. At the age of 20, person is drafted and the basic training lasts between 7.5 and 15 months, depending upon suitability. After the basic training a person is regularly called to military refresher courses.A characteristic feature of the Swedish arts scene is the large number of art associations. Most of them are formed by art-loving employees at companies or institutions.Foreign art experts often find Swedish design very functional, and no wonder, since Sweden was one of the strongholds of the Functional movement. One of top creations is the District Court House in Sölvesborg, which became a source of inspiration to European and American architects. Tiled stoves are not only decorative. But they offer a more economical way of heating a house than an open fireplace. The production of tiled stoves in Sweden was resumed in 1980. Since a large part of Sweden is forested there is plenty of material for woodcarvings. In the province of Dalama this tradition has become a tourist industry, the most famous product of which is the gaudily painted Dalecarlian horse. The numbers of glassworks have declined over the years, but there are still a number of them producing high quality art glassware as well as glass for everyday use.
